The nelfood.com Story
nelfood.com grew out of the Physical Properties of Food DataBase project.
This project was initiated to collect and make available on the internet reliable and useful data on Physical Properties of Foods.
The project was part funded by the EU, received commercial sponsership from Nestle, RHM and Unilever, was managed by Dr Paul Nesvadba, and the internet work was done by NEL.

Objectives

The overall objective of the Concerted Action was to assist the food industry by supplying data on physical properties of foods. This involves:
  1. forming a Network of scientists and industrialists who are interested in measuring and using data on the physical properties of foods.
  2. constructing the Database of Physical Properties of Foods
  3. making the Network a continuous means of collecting data for the Database.
More specifically, these broad objectives had the following sub-objectives:
  • To create a computerised database of physical properties of foods, accessible particularly by the European food industry.
  • To collect reliable and useful data on physical properties of foods for inclusion in the Database.
  • To increase the involvement of the food industry in the project.
  • To establish links between Universities, publicly funded research institutes, the food industry and others interested in the project.
  • To seek ways of promoting and exploiting the database within and outside the EU.
  • To explore the possibilities for further development of the database beyond the life of this project (generating proposals for such development, seeking industrial and other support).
